Rules & Regulations

BUTC is fundamentally a race true to the spirit of self-sufficiency. Therefore in the spirit of fairness and to ensure an equal playing field for all race participants, BUTC will impose penalties ranging from time penalties to disqualification based on the severity of the breach of the Rules and Regulations.

  • Race participants are not allowed to accept any form of mobile support along the route, eg: pacing or mulling

  • Race participants must carry the full set of mandatory items at all times.

  • Race participants are not allowed to accept any support outside of the designated Aid Stations. However, race participants are encouraged to bring some cash to buy food or drink from shops owned by the locals.

  • Race participants may take as much food and beverage as needed from each Aid Station provided by the Organizer. However, race participants are not allowed to take any bottles, cans or cups from these areas and therefore should plan on carrying and refilling their own hydration systems at the Aid Stations. This is to prevent littering.

  • Race participants may run, walk or crawl, but must not make use of any motorized or wheeled vehicles during the race.

  • Race participants are to make forward progress exclusively under their own power. Being carried, pulled or pushed by other race participants or members of the public is prohibited.

  • Should race participants choose to use poles, these are to be carried with them at all times from start to finish. Race participants are not allowed to discard, stash or give them to any crew members for keeping. Race participants need to be conscious of those around them when using poles.

Safety

Should a race participant become immobile and need to consult with a medic, s/he will need to take the following steps:

  1. Initially use your first aid kit and keep warm, dry and be visible.

  2. Call/Phone the emergency number located on your race number/bib. You will be asked your race number, name and location, and help will be sent on its way.

  • If there is no Cell Phone Reception:

  1. Wait for another race participant who will assist you to find the nearest marshal or Organizing Committee member, who will then make contact with the Race HQ.

  2. A medical and rescue team will be dispatched to your location.

  3. You will be treated and allowed to continue, or be treated and evacuated off the route to the nearest medical asset by ambulance.

  • DNF (Did Not Finish):  Should you need to drop out of the race, you will need to continue to the nearest Aid Station along the marked route and inform the Station Captain.

NOTE: If you are not sure who that is, ask around until you find him - this is your responsibility. If you are unable to continue, the medical team will communicate this to the Race HQ.

  • Should you leave the course and fail to notify the race officials, you will be banned from participating in future races (unless you were assisted off the course by the Medic Crews).  The Organizers will provide a shuttle service back to the start/finish.

  • Race participants are to have their mandatory items with them at all times during the race. Random gear checks will be performed during the event.

  • Race participants must follow the marked course/route the entire way and to register at each Aid Station/timing checkpoint.

  • Your race number must be visible at all times - on the outside of your clothing and in front. Please ensure that your race number is not covered by any article of clothing.

  • BUTC has race finish cut-off times that will be strictly enforced.  You must obey directions of the marshals, if you miss any cut-off time.

  • 12km = 4 hours (1100 am)

  • 25km = 8 hours, 2 COTS (8am &1pm)

  • 50km = 15 hours, 5 C.O.Ts (9am, 12pm, 2pm, 5pm, 8pm)

Taking Care of the Environment

The Crocker Range Park where you will be running on has been preserved, conserved and maintained by many people before you, so please take care of it and leave it pristine (unspoiled) for those who will come after you.

  • Any littering on the course is strictly prohibited. Race participants are responsible for making sure that anything they discard goes into a bin. Please strictly adhere to the “Leave no trace and take no souvenirs” policy.

  • Do not cut any trees.

  • Yield trail by respecting other trail users (i.e., recreational users and residents) when overtaking and be aware of blind spots and slow down when you need to.

  • Do not take short cuts, including avoiding switchbacks.

  • Do not overtake by going off trail. Wait until there is adequate space to do so.

  • If you deliberately ignore customary rules of conduct on the trail, road and checkpoints, especially concerning safety, waste, erosion and hygiene – you will at best incur a time penalty, or at worst it will be grounds for disqualification

You will be running on mostly private land or farm route. Therefore, please watch your step and do not take any fruits.

Food & Drink

  • Race participants may take as much food and beverage as needed from each Aid Station which are provided by the Organizers, but are not be allowed to take any bottles, cans or cups from these areas and therefore should plan on carrying and refilling their hydration systems at the aid stations.

Volunteers

Volunteers are the backbone of any race. As race participants, please show your appreciation for their efforts to help you finish the race by thanking and giving a smile to our volunteers.

Insurance

The BUTC Organizers have public liability insurance cover. This does not include personal accident insurance for race participants. We recommend that you arrange your own personal accident insurance, ambulance cover and income protection insurance before participating in the event - to cover any unforeseen personal costs which you may incur due to ambulance trips, medical expenses or time off work due to injuries sustained whilst participating in the event. International race participants should take out travel insurance that provides cover for ultra-trail running events.

Safety Considerations

As a BUTC race participant, you are responsible for yourself and should know the rules and regulations of the race. You need to be able to clearly evaluate your mental and physical abilities. You need to be sufficiently trained and keep with you all the necessary equipment. Race participants should be able to complete the race in a semi-autonomous manner in terms of food and drink, clothing and safety. This requires an ability to adapt and face expected or unexpected problems (darkness, bad weather, physical ailments, injury, etc).

BUTC takes place on very rugged, single-track hiking trails. Running on such trails comes with inherent risks that race participants accept upon registering for the event. Race participants will be in remote areas where help is not always nearby for extended periods and need to be prepared accordingly in cases of emergency.
